10 Tips to reduce eye strain

Eye strain is not avoidable in today's life because all our work is locked around the technology. While watching television, computer or while studying or reading books for hours together eye strain will occurs naturally.

Eyes are delicate and precious,” says Dr. Andrew Iwach, spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). “Just a touch of maintenance will keep them going for years.”

Tips to reduce eye strain

§  When your eyes are feeling tired or for every 20 to 30 minutes of work, look at a distant object and blink several times. This will change the focal length of your eyes and helps in better focusing.

§  You can massage your eyelids, the area around your eyes, including the muscles over your temple, upper cheek and eyebrows once or twice a day, for around 10 seconds each time. The massage will help your muscles relax, stimulate your tear glands as well as reduce your symptoms of eye strain.

§  Any focused work means you don’t blink as frequently. And all the computer work and internet surfing can take a toll. It’s always good to take a break from activities which involve prolonged staring. Keeping the eyes open and looking at the monitor continuously for long hours will dry up the eyes and lead to eye strain. When you blink, oil is supposed to coat the eyes. Blinking frequently moistures the eyes and reduces the eye strain.

§  Dr Harish S Belvi, a practising ophthalmologist (eye specialist) based in Mumbai , says that regular work hours should be infused with short breaks. During such breaks, he suggests a small and easy eye exercise: "First, blink your eyes several times. While you keep your eyes closed, roll your eyeballs both clockwise and anticlockwise and take a deep breath. Gradually open your eyes while releasing your breath. This exercise lasts for a minute and you can repeat it three times before getting back to work." It serves as a good workout for the eyes.

§  Rub your palms against each other till them become warm. Cover your eyes with your warm palms for about a minute. Palming is another great way to relax and soothe your eyes.

§  Splashing water on your face during breaks can keep you and your eyes refreshed. This also helps in cooling your eyes.

Eye Care
§  A few minutes of walk during breaks will refresh your body and mind. It is also good for your eyes as walking increases blood supply to your eyes.

§  Fix an anti glare screen to your monitor or use anti glare glass while working on computers. Also position the monitor and lights in such a manner that glare from the screen is minimum.

§  Lack of sleep, fatigue, poor lighting and an incorrect posture (such as slouching on your chair)  can also aggravate eye strain.Rest your body by lying flat on the floor and close your eyes and give rest to your eyes whenever possible.

§  Whenever possible look your monitor downwards instead of looking at the center of your monitor screen.Looking downwards reduces the eye strain because eyelids can keep the top half of the eye closed, which means half of the eye muscles are relaxed.

A balanced diet, regular sleep habits, a balance between work and rest, exercises all reduces the eye strain(tiredness) and helps to maintain our eye sight.
